Greek Gyros with Meatballs

Greek Gyros with Meatballs Photo

Fall is in the air. To me that means time for comfort food. Often times, comfort food gets the reputation of taking all day to make. That just isn't true! Now, you can probably simmer a sauce for hours, but who has time for that? I am all about quick, easy, and still tasting great. School is in full swing, and with that comes homework, sports, clubs, practices, and more. But just because we are busy does not mean we won't be having comfort food on a weeknight.

My definition of comfort food has changed a little since I was a child. These days a classic Indian curry or Balsamic Pork over Polenta is more what I crave. Greek food ranks right up there as well. I could probably have gyros twice a week, and be one happy girl! So I decided to come up with a quick way I could get the flavor of them at home. I also love meatballs, so I blended two of my favorites together, and came up with these Greek gyros with meatballs.

Sandwiches are always great for weeknights. And meatball sandwiches are just kind of fun to eat! I used a recipe for homemade pitas because I had extra time the day I made these. But feel free to use store bought pitas or naan bread. Even traditional hoagie rolls would be great.

The Greek meatballs have spices you probably have in your pantry already, so they come together very quickly. Tzatziki sauce is super easy to make. I like to squeeze all the liquid out of the cucumber, so the sauce isn't runny. Aside from that, you just stir a few things together. My 9 year old isn't a big fan of the tzatziki sauce, so he just uses a little ranch instead.

Trust me, definitely weeknight worthy!

Weeknight worthy, indeed! Want to round out your weekly meal plan? Add Erin's cheeseburger macaroni and homemade pizza rolls too, for a great week of eating!

Ingredients

For the Meatballs:
  • 1 pound ground beef, or lamb
  • 2 cloves garlics, minced
  • 2 teaspoons marjoram
  • 2 teaspoons oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 small onion, grated
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
For the Tzatziki Sauce:
  • 1 cup plain greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons dill
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
For Serving:
  • pitas
  • diced tomatoes

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. In a large bowl combine all of the ingredients for the meatballs. Using clean hands, mix until well combined. Form into 1 inch balls, and place on a baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until cooked thru.
  3. Meanwhile, prepare the tzatziki sauce. Grate the cucumber, including the peel. Wrap in a clean kitchen towel, and squeeze to remove the liquid. In a small bowl combine yogurt, drained cucumber, lemon juice, dill, garlic, salt and pepper. Store in the fridge until ready to serve.
  4. To serve top each pita with a couple meatballs, tzatziki sauce and a few tomatoes.
