Bobotie

Bobotie is one of my favorite dishes - I've eaten it many times in South Africa, but this was my first time to make it myself. This is an excellent recipe and close to what one would find in South Africa. I used half lamb & half bison, which was a great mix and served it with a tamarind chutney and roasted root vegetables instead of rice. Next time, I would add more spices - I suspect the author may have gone easy these, thinking that not everyone would go for the full Monty of Cape Malay strength. So make it to the recipe first time out, then experiment by adding a bit more spice. Other recipes equally authentic call for the same spices, plus allspice, clove, coriander and cumin to ramp up the taste. Either way, it's a classic dish and unexpected that everyone will love.
