If you've never tried fried pickles, there is no time like the present! These oven fried pickles take away a little bit of the guilt but none of the flavor. Serve them up with a quick spicy ketchup and you'll have a new game day favorite!
The big game is almost here. It's funny because in the fall, I get totally into football season. I'm part of a fantasy league and have a great time drafting my team and checking my stats. Not to mention the message board trash talking. For about the first two weeks, that is. Basically after that, it's all downhill and I'm in it only for the game day food. A good plate of shredded chicken nachos can make anything more interesting, let me tell you.
Now let's talk about these oven fried pickles. I've been into fried pickles since college. They are the ultimate college snack food, one that we ordered all the time when we went to the local wing place. While I still love classic BBQ chicken wings, my love of fried pickles has stayed just as strong, if not grown stronger. The problem is, making classic fried pickles at home can be a little involved plus my thirty-something metabolism doesn't agree with my former fried food days.
These oven fried pickles are really not fried at all. They're baked in the oven, but still have a wonderfully crispy coating that satisfies my cravings for fried food. I used my very favorite Tony Packo's Sweet Hot Pickles. Being a Toledo native, these are my all time favorite. If they're not available where you are, use your favorite thick dill chip or even a zesty garlic chip in place of the sweet hots.
This recipe is incredibly easy. The pickles get coated in a simple Panko breading and placed on a rimmed baking sheet and baked. You don't have to worry about heating up a deep fryer and frying them in small batches. They all get baked at once and are ready to eat.
Serve them up alongside a quick and easy spicy ketchup and you'll have yourself a new game day favorite!
