since dal is a staple at home, i try to make different varieties of dal. this trevti dal is from the gujarati cuisine and is a no onion no garlic recipe.
in india there are many ways a simple dal is cooked. like trevti dal, there is also pancharatna dal which is made with 5 different lentils. like all dal recipes, trevti dal is also easy to prepare and like all gujarati recipes, this dal is also delicious.

lets start step by step trevti dal recipe:
1. take ⅓ cup each of chana dal (bengal gram), moong dal (mung lentils) and arhar dal (pigeon pea lentils) in a bowl or pan. you could even substitute moong dal with masoor dal (orange lentils).
2. rinse all the three lentils well in water and then soak them in enough water for 1 hour.
3. drain the lentils.
4. take the lentils in a pressure cooker. add ½ tsp turmeric powder. do check the notes section of the recipe details below, on how to cook the lentils in a pot.
5. pour 2.5 cups water.
6. stir and then pressure cook the dals for 8 to 9 whistles till they are softened and cooked thoroughly. if the lentils are not softened completely, then pressure cook for some more whistles.
7. lightly mash the dal with a spoon and keep aside.
8. heat 2 tbsp oil in a small pan.
9. add the following spices – ½ tsp cumin seeds, 1 small to medium tej patta and 3 cloves.
10. stir and fry the spices till the cumin seeds splutter and all the spices become aromatic. fry on a low flame so that the spices do not get burnt.
11. then add a generous pinch of asafoetida and 1 or 2 dry red chilies. fry till the red chilies change their color. a few seconds.
12. add 1 tsp ginger green chili paste. stir and saute for about 15 to 20 seconds.
13. then add ⅓ cup chopped tomatoes.
14. stir well.
15. add ½ tsp red chili powder.
16. stir and saute the tomatoes till they soften.
17. once the tomatoes are softened, pour the entire tempering mixture along with the oil in the cooked dal.
18. stir well and add 1 cup water.
19. season with salt.
20. stir and keep the pressure cooker on the stove top and bring to a simmer. do stir at intervals so that the lentils don't stick to the bottom of the cooker. simmer for 7 to 8 minutes on a low to medium flame.
21. then add 1 tsp lime juice.
22. now add 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves. stir again and switch off the flame.
23. serve trevti dal hot with some steamed rice or soft chapatis or phulkas.

trevti dal - a tangy and mildly spiced dal made with three types of lentils.

INGREDIENTS (measuring cup used, 1 cup = 250 ml)
for pressure cooking the lentils:
- ⅓ cup chana dal/husked and split bengal gram
- ⅓ cup moong dal/husked and split mung beans
- ⅓ cup arhar dal/tuvar dal/husked and split pigeon peas
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 2.5 cups water for pressure cooking
other ingredients:
- ½ inch ginger + 1 green chili, crushed to a paste in mortar-pestle or 1 tsp ginger-green chili paste
- ½ tsp cumin seeds
- 1 small tomato, chopped, about ⅓ cup chopped tomatoes
- ½ tsp red chili powder
- a generous pinch of asafoetida/hing
- 3 cloves/lavang
- 1 small to medium tej patta/indian bay leaf
- 1 or 2 dry red chilies/sookhi lal mirch
- 1 tsp lime juice or add as required
- 1 cup of water to be added later
- 2 tbsp oil
- salt as required
INSTRUCTIONS
pressure cooking the lentils:
- take ⅓ cup each of chana dal, moong dal and arhar dal in a bowl or pan.

NOTES
for cooking lentils in a pot:
add the soaked lentils along with 3 to 3.5 cups water in a pot. add a few drops of oil along with the ½ tsp turmeric powder. stir well. cover the pot and cook the lentils till they are softened completely. if the water becomes less, then add some more hot water.
