Yesterday, on our Facebook page, we played a game called "What's in the Slow Cooker?" I posted images and clues to see if anyone could guess what delicious treat was under the lid. By the end of the day, we had some pretty good guesses!
Now for the big reveal. I was making "Slow Cooker Sugared Almonds!"
Keep reading for the recipe…
I have been making candied nuts for years, but I had never tried them in a slow cooker. My new neighborhood here in New York City inspired me to give this version a try.
Just a few short weeks ago, I relocated from Los Angels to the Big Apple. I found my dream apartment just steps from Columbus Circle, on the southwest corner of Central Park.
I love that this part of the city is always buzzing. It is easy to get to and from just about anywhere from here. I used to love driving in Los Angeles, but I am starting to appreciate the ease of the subway system.
Parked right on the corner of Columbus Circle is a New York City street food staple – the Nuts4Nuts cart. The aroma of these roasted nuts are nothing short of intoxicating. In this crisp Fall air, it is impossible to pass the cart without at least considering the purchase of a snack.
Sugared almonds, cashews and peanuts are prepared right there on the street. They are immediately filled into individual-sized bags and sold warm. The exact recipe remains a mystery, but I did my best to recreate this copycat recipe at home.
It seemed to me that a slow cooker would be the best way to mimic this copper pot concoction that is used on the cart. I saw the vendor refill the bowl with a container of granulated sugar, so I know that is also a key ingredient. The air always smells like cinnamon with a hint of vanilla, so I used that in my version as well.
If you are ever in the New York area, I highly recommend picking up a bag. In the meantime, give this version a try at home!
