A Whiskey & Winter Citrus Cocktail Recipe: The Blinker Cocktail — The 10-Minute Happy Hour

Pin_it_button

In the winter I crave two things: juicy Florida grapefruit and rye whiskey. Until the Blinker, I had no idea how good they could be together.

Typically, I rave over the case of grapefruit that arrives each January, and this year is no different. This is some of the sweetest, juiciest and most delicious grapefruit and I eat at least one a day. I fancy other grapefruit cocktails, like the Paloma, but this week I was looking for a way to incorporate my favorite winter liquor — rye whiskey.

It took mere seconds to discover the Blinker, a cocktail dating back to the 1930s calling for a mix of rye, grapefruit, and grenadine. Three ingredients and some ice and you'll be sipping this vibrant, sophisticated drink in no time.

The Blinker Cocktail

Serves 1

2 ounces rye whiskey
1 ounce freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice
1 teaspoon grenadine
Lemon peel, for garnish

In a shaker filled with ice, combine all ingredients except for the lemon peel. Add ice. Shake until well chilled.

Strain into a martini or coupe glass and garnish with a lemon peel.

Recipe Notes

  • You can make this recipe with raspberry syrup as a substitute for the grenadine. If you don't have either you can use some of the syrup from a jar of maraschino cherries.
