When it comes to Mexican and Tex-Mex food, it's difficult to beat a good taco sauce. Yup, taco sauce. It's delicious, versatile, and crazy easy to make at home! We almost always keep a bottle in our fridge, and it makes frequent appearances on tacos and in taco dip.
Heck, I've even started adding a little to the scrambled egg sandwiches that I've been making for lunch lately. But a couple of months ago, we were out of taco sauce, and I wasn't about to make a trip to the store just for one thing. So what did I do? I made this homemade taco sauce instead… and I haven't gone back to the store-bought version since!
Other that a variety of spices, the key ingredient in taco sauce is tomato paste. Since my wife is Italian, and I love Italian food, you can be sure that we've always got a stash of tomato paste in the pantry. This homemade taco sauce is way tastier (and less expensive) than the store-bought version!
If you've never made homemade taco sauce before, then you're gonna be amazed at how easy it is to make. Spend about 5 minutes pulling the spices together and then let the sauce simmer for 20 minutes, and you'll have a jar of one of the tastiest taco sauces ever! (As an added bonus, I've found that this sauce tastes even better the day after you make it.)
One of my favorite time-saving tricks in the kitchen is to freeze ready-to-use ingredients in small batches. For example, I make a huge batch of basil pesto every summer and freeze it in ice cube trays for easy weeknight meals in the winter.
Similarly, I usually make a double batch of this homemade taco sauce and then freeze it in 1/2 cup portions. Then, whenever we need taco sauce for a meal or recipe, I pull out a portion. Quick and easy!
