Pin_it_button

For many of us around the country, it's been a very trying winter. A friend of mine today said, "I'm beyond the winter blues at this point. I'm fully in the black." For her and any others out there needing a little pick-me-up, here's a sure-fire cure for the winter blues that will have you happy in no time.

This cocktail, the Nor'easter, was served to me in a bourbon-centric bar in Brooklyn's Cobble Hill neighborhood, Char No. 4. The bar is named after the char used on bourbon barrels that gives bourbon those sweet caramelized flavors and gorgeous amber hues. The cocktail is named after the infamous icy storms that wreak havoc on innocent imbibers in the northeast, bringing everything from hurricane force winds to blizzard like conditions. The Nor'easter the perfect name for this icy sip, which includes wintry flavors of maple and spicy ginger along with the soothing warmth of bourbon.

At this point, I don't even want to talk about the weather anymore, but I just couldn't resist ordering the Nor'easter. I'm glad I did and you will be too. Break out the bar nuts and shake up your own Nor'easter for a happy hour that'll cure your winter blues in under ten minutes.

The Nor'easter Cocktail

Inspired by Char No. 4; serves 1

2 ounces bourbon
1/2 ounce lime juice
1/2 ounce maple syrup
Ginger Beer

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the bourbon, lime juice and maple syrup. Shake and strain into a rocks glass with ice. Top with ginger beer.

Recipe Notes

  • If you don't have ginger beer you can substitute ginger ale but the cocktail will be sweeter.
