Gingerbread Hot Chocolate

Gingerbread Hot Chocolate Photo

We drink a ton of hot chocolate in our household. We live in Canada, so our winters tend to be brutally cold. We spend a lot of time outside in the winter because we have horses. This is our favourite way to warm up after a long, hard, cold day.

One of our favourite hot chocolate recipes is peppermint hot chocolate. It's sheer perfection around the holidays, and beyond. We also really dig coconut hot chocolate. It's so fun to make and tastes out of this world. Take it to the next level and top it with coconut whipped cream.

What I love about this gingerbread hot chocolate recipe is it's super easy to make and uses ingredients you already have in your pantry. There is nothing fancy or hard to find in this recipe.

The ingredients are simple and easily accessible. I dig recipes where I don't have to spend hours hunting down ingredients.

So many recipes call for molasses, which I personally always have on hand because of the horses. The downside is the molasses is usually in the barn fridge, not the home fridge. So, for this recipe, I use dark brown sugar so I get the flavour of molasses with one less step. I'm all about making things easy.

I also use Biscoff in this recipe. It makes the gingerbread hot chocolate taste like you're drinking a gingerbread cookie.

I can't even handle the deliciousness that is Biscoff. It adds such a great flavour explosion to this recipe, without a lot of fuss and adding too many ingredients. Again, easy is my main goal here.

My other secret ingredient is chocolate milk. I know, what a concept. Simple, easy, and already packed with chocolatey goodness. It helps give it a flavour boost without having to melt chocolate. I do add cocoa powder because I want this recipe to be extra chocolatey and delicious. It's how I roll.

This hot chocolate is made in a saucepan and cooked on the stovetop. I know, right? So old school.

I'm telling you right now there are only two ways to make GREAT hot chocolate. One is on the stove, and two is in a slow cooker. Do not microwave hot chocolate. Sorry, all you microwave lovers. I'm keeping it real here.

Feel free to adapt this to your own taste. Add a little this, or a little that. There are no rules when it comes to hot chocolate. Make it the way you like it. That's the key to any successful recipe if you ask me. Taste as you go and adjust each recipe until it's perfect for you and makes your taste buds do the happy dance.

Gingerbread Hot Chocolate Recipe

Ingredients

  • 6 cups chocolate milk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, good quality
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons biscoff spread, heaping
  • 3 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
Optional Toppings:
  • whipped cream
  • miniature marshmallows
  • cocoa powder, for dusting
  • cinnamon sticks, for stirring
  • mini gingerbread men, for garnish

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan combine the chocolate milk, cocoa powder, brown sugar, Biscoff spread, ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar and Biscoff dissolve completely. Do not overcook and do not boil.
  3. Cook for about 5 minutes, just until the mixture is steaming and is warmed thoroughly. A little tip is to remove a small amount with a ladle to test it prior to removing from heat. That way you can check the flavour, and the temperature.
  4. Remove from heat and pour into mugs. Fill each mug 3/4 full, that way you leave room for add-ins.
  5. Top each mug with whipped cream, mini marshmallows, and then shake some cocoa powder over top. Add a cinnamon stick for stirring, and a gingerbread man for fun!
  6. Serve with a big old hot chocolate loving smile!
